U.S. Submarine Sinks Iranian Frigate IRIS Dena With Torpedo, First Enemy Warship Sunk Since WWII
A U.S. Navy fast attack submarine fired a single Mk 48 torpedo at the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean on March 4, sinking the vessel in what the Pentagon confirmed is the first U.S. submarine sinking of an enemy warship since World War II. Sri Lankan officials reported 79 survivors rescued, with 101 crew members still missing and one person confirmed dead; the attack also represents the first submarine warship sinking globally since HMS Conqueror downed the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano during the 1982 Falklands War.
