Friendly-Fire Incidents Are Nothing New In Modern Air Warfare
The loss of three U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles to apparent friendly fire over Kuwait has prompted a historical review of blue-on-blue incidents in modern air warfare. Past tragedies include the 1994 shootdown of two UH-60 Black Hawks by F-15 pilots who misidentified them as Iraqi Hinds, killing 26 people, and the 2003 Iraq invasion during which a Patriot battery downed a RAF Tornado and a Navy F/A-18C was destroyed by friendly missiles. Most recently, in December 2024, a Navy cruiser mistook an F/A-18F for a Houthi anti-ship missile during Red Sea operations and shot it down. The War Zone analysis concludes that despite technological advances, the complexities of aerial warfare make fratricide an enduring and unpredictable hazard.
